  • Net cafes are already a thing there, but personal gaming at home has always been dominated by the portable market or consoles, partially because Japanese companies are the ones making 2/3 of them, but also because the majority of the “gaming” demographic are younger people who live in small studio apartments in Tokyo, and would opt to have a TV with cable television and consoles in their living rooms.

With streaming becoming a big thing, at home media centres are slowly shifting to personal laptops (especially during the pandemic). I have maybe seen two actual gaming PC towers when I lived there (because again, you can go to a net cafe/PC bang for that), but a lot of the gamers I knew were slowly shifting to modest gaming laptops for their at home setups.

  • I don’t think many people would claim overall valuation has much of anything to do with the value labor brings to an organization.

Apologies, can you clarify what exactly you mean by this? Because when I say their labour is not being valued, I do extend that to the Wall Street orgs that are doing the evaluations. They look at the “product” on offer, not the people actually working and developing it.

Are you saying because stock prices aren’t steady, we can’t correlate that to salaries?

  • It’s so interesting that there are comments about how people can mute/block people if they get harassed, but nothing about the people doing the actual unhinged harassment. It seems personal responsibility only should be for the victims of harassment…

On the topic itself, I actually know someone who works at Riot that is working on their “player management” tools, and the amount of data they have driving these is fascinating. The datasets they have are global, and aside from Vanguard, apparently there are certain toxicity trends that are so niche (in the Chinese servers, for example), you have to tune for the other server data sets for it (they weren’t really clear on how this works).

I really wish I could see what the backend of this tech is like, very few games have 10+ years of player and esports data to train their LLM/AI models.

  • This is why I report the job postings to the website posted, and to my country’s department of labour. I know it seems futile, but I’m petty and I have time.

Turns out, it’s actually helpful, I had someone reach out to me saying they were investigating a certain company, and if I had any more information about the screenshot I sent them a year ago.
