What I continue to not understand is how is anyone still on his side. Not like MAGA cult followers but like people with actual power and those that won’t lose anything from just letting him fail. This is a rhetorical question but it still boggles my mind.
I guess it’s a good example that everyone can see as to how flawed the US justice system is towards the rich and powerful. Like most of us knew it but this is so hard to deny. This would never be the case for some normal person.
Class loyalty trumps any kind of political philosophy.
This is what people have difficulty recognizing in Democrats, that establishment Republicans and establishment Democrats have the same fundemental goal; protect the class structure above all else.
They need to sometimes give the appearance of fighting for some popular policy position now and then, but ultimately they do not care or want progress. The ideal outcome for them is the appearance of struggle towards change without actual change.
That’s why things like abortion never got legislated even with a supermajority, it’s too useful a tool to give the appearance of fighting for something while doing nothing.
For better or worse, his (possible) reelection is too important to several foreign nations and billionaires across the world. That’s all you need to know.
