I have a Surface Notebook 2 and for the life of me can’t get Ubuntu (or Xubuntu in my case) to work with it. No matter which installation style I use, either it crashes during the installation or never boots into the bootloader. Eventually I installed some custom Arch, but I hate it.
I’m using USB-C to 3.5" adapters, they cost next to nothing and allow me to use a much wider pool of phones. Some even come with a USB-C passthrough so you can charge it or connect other stuff simultaneously.

It actually does with the default setting, but it doesn’t show individual progress bars, making it harder to notice. You basically have the “updating repositories…” bar on the very top, and then one after another the apps get the green “update” button. At this point however the updates have already been downloaded, and the button starts the installation of the update locally.
The fix is called silent mode. You can define emergency contacts that would ring anyway.
You’d have thought by now they trained AI to count fingers.
So far so good, I have to say. I’ve got a subscription for Astrill until November, but will keep the free proton running in parallel as a long term test and then consider switching. Thanks a lot!
I had a shadowsocks server on a vps, was dead after a few weeks. Hosted on AWS Hong Kong (before China took over). They blacklist IPs very quickly.
Yeah the problem I have with those is that they are mostly run by Chinese, be it on- or offshore, and they can be compromised or extorted. And any service that accepts payment via alipay is sketchy in my books.
I’m not sure, haven’t read about that yet. But I’m testing it as we speak, since they make it available in the free version as well, which is nice.

Proton is unfortunately using wireguard and openvpn protocols, both of which can be blocked with relative ease.
I used them before moving to China, and within 3 months of arriving, the service was permanently interrupted, and their support acknowledged the outage, said they can’t do anything about it, and ghosted me on the refund request since I had an annual subscription.
Mullvad is generally considered the industry leader btw., though for China there’s hardly anyone but Astrill that actually works.
That’s why I stick with Android 12, all my banking apps work just fine with magisk’s DenyList. Heard that’s getting tricky on 13 or 14.
And I absolutely need root to add system-wide adblocking and security features like Ice Box and Storage Isolation.
I live in China, just had a look. Already available to purchase (online) with 3 day delivery time stated. The specs are pretty impressive, and seems like rooting Honor phones is rather straightforward - with Chinese operating systems that’s a must have to de-bloat, those things are positively hostile.
Not currently looking for a new phone, but since OnePlus seems to be going downhill and not offering OxygenOS and ColorOS in parallel anymore but force the Color-Bloat down all users throats, I will need to switch brands sooner or later, so will keep an eye on user feedback and price development over time.

People genuinely care about message colors? That’s so far beyond my level of understanding, I don’t even pretend anymore.
Yeah I’ll try eventually, but I got another Laptop running Xubuntu just fine, so I just don’t really use the Surface at all. It’s more of a last resort for the time being, and for that, any OS will do.
