Edit: Guys I didn’t write the headline; the subtitle that I added, I’ve now fixed tho

Edit: Also, the information about there being no escape is out of date – here’s a quick guide to how to fix the problem in the modern day

    Unpopular stance, but I agree.

To each their own, but mandatory updates are very important for a large amount of PC users security.

Sometimes things being forced is a good thing, in very specific cases such as this one. It’s an unpopular opinion for sure, but I think we can all agree that if everyone’s systems were all up to date, a lot of people’s devices would be much more secure.

I say a good compromise is forced updates by default with a process you have to go out of your way to disable them still existing under an advanced settings menu or similar. That way power users can still have full control over their PC, and users who don’t want to bother with infosec still have a secure system, maybe paired with that “delay update” windows thing available for times when you need guaranteed uptime/stability.

I’d be fine with what you describe in the second paragraph, but that’s not what’s meant by “forced.” That’s opt-out. Forced is what’s really objectionable, especially when it’s abused, as discussed in the article and elsewhere in these comments.

I see, thanks for telling me, I guess I had it mixed up a bit. Opt-out seems to be what I’m in support of but was calling it the wrong thing
